Fighter Strike Leader of IAF

“Four brave men who do not know each other will not dare attack a lion. Four less brave, but knowing each other well, sure of their reliability and consequently of mutual aid, will attack resolutely.”  Col. Ardant du Picq Through two world wars, as technology improved, modern war has become more and more reliant on airpower. Tactics are continuously evolved and modified for quick success in aerial combat as well as for victorious strike mission. My First Air Travel Experience

“I believe that if one always looked at the skies, one would end up with wings.” Gustave Flaubert In autumn 1992, I was 20 going on 21; the “going on” part is important to emphasize for various reasons. I was sixth termer, an ordinary cadet of the prestigious National Defense Academy (NDA), Pune about to graduate in a few weeks. During the 3 years of training at National Defense Academy, we had been turned into “Jack of all trade but master of none”. It was only in the last term…

First Love

Being the wife of a military officer is hard you have got to be OKAY with a lot of stuff which is not normal. It is very demanding and comes with its pleasures as well as pains. You have to got to hold it together personally socially and professionally. Rarely things go as planned. It may or seem surreal. Your role may seem old fashioned. The bottom line is: Military life is a life of sacrifice, however large or small, for service members and their families. Presenting a poem by Mrs Lakshmi Mini. Dedicated…

Marching Ahead, Women Officers of Indian Armed Forces!

Employment of women in the Indian Armed Forces is a practice that has been adopted in the last just over two and a half decades. However, as a concept, it is neither new nor novel as is evident from history which is replete with examples all over the world. Indian Air Force inducts women in all roles, including combat and support roles. As of September 2020, there were 1,875 female officers serving in the IAF, including 10 pilots and 18 navigators. The number of women joining armed forces is steadily…

How Daulat Beg Oldi Airstrip was Revived by IAF

Daulat Beg Oldi (also Oldie, DBO) is a historic campsite and current military base located in Ladakh, India on an ancient trade route connecting Ladakh to the Tarim Basin. MiG 21: Love her OR Hate her?

The most widely produced supersonic jet fighter of all time, the MiG-21 (Western reporting name Fishbed) is an incredibly prolific aircraft. Dated but nimble, it has allowed skilled pilots in past decades to defeat more advanced aircraft. Though its days look to be numbered. To me, it does not. I think it will continue to live in the heart of pilots and adversaries alike for decades to come. Single-seat, single-engine, supersonic, all-weather, day-night capable, jet fighter aircraft produced by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau was an improvement on prior generations of…
